| Traditionally,
this was made with ground left over roast lamb. I've never had
it that way, though. One piece of advice: keep it simple. This
is comfort food, so you don't want to go trying to fancy it
up! |

|
| 1
lb. ground beef |
|
1
onion, chopped |
| 1/2
oz. butter or oil |
|
1
tsp. flour |
| pinch
of thyme |
|
stock
or water |
| 1/2
tsp salt |
|
pepper |
| mashed
potatoes |
|
|
| |
|
|
| Heat
the butter or oil until hot and cook the chopped onion in it
until it is translucent. Add the meat and cook until it changes
color. Blend in the flour, then enough stock or water to moisten
the meat. Season to taste. Let it cook over a low heat until
it's tasty.
Put in a greased
oven dish and cover with well-mashed potatoes whipped with
a little milk and butter. Brown in the oven for 20-30 minutes
at 400° (GM 6). You might need to finish it off under
the grill to get the potatoes nice and brown.
Serve with simple
vegetables, such as peas or carrots, and a nice peppery gravy.
