Talks
between the Writers' Guild and producers remained shrouded in mystery,
but hopes are beginning to rise. The current contract expires in the
early hours of Wednesday morning, but both sides have indicated that
talks will continue past that deadline. At this point the only sticking
point appears to be the $100 million residuals question. Residuals
are the payments writers receive for sales into secondary markets,
such as cable TV, videos, and reruns. According to a story in the
Los Angeles Times, some companies, including Walt Disney Co. are still
taking a hard line (pretty rich coming for a company that's planning
on spending $5 million on the premiere of Pearl Harbor...they've
rented an aircraft carrier fercryinoutloud).
One good sign is that no notification for a strike vote has gone out
to rank and file members -- a prerequisite before a strike can be
called.
As for the actors, their contract demands are reportedly ready, though
if the WGA talks reach a happy conclusion it bodes well for SAG too.
Many of the same residuals issues are the main bone of contention
there as well. |

68 - Roman
Emperor, Nero commits suicide at the age of 31. Initially
a popular ruler, it didn't take him long to mess things up.
Killing his mother didn't do much for his rep, either.
