It's
one of the most gripping of the ancient legends, the story of how
the young prince Jason left his home with a ship crewed by the greatest
of heroes, in search of the Golden Fleece. The adventures of Jason
and his crew, and its tragic aftermath have been told and retold,
but it was assumed that he and his kingdom were mere myth.

An article in the Greek newspaper, Ethnos, reports that excavations
begun in Pagastikos Bay in 1977, may have unearthed ancient Iolkos.
Iolkos, now called Volos, was the port from which the Argonauts set
out on their quest. The city was at its height between the 15th and
12th centuries BC. The palace complex is thought to date from the
14th to 13th centuries BC, which would be the correct period for Jason's
voyage.
Iolkos was also said to be the home of the centaur. There's no news
on any remains of the horse/man creatures being discovered. Nor of
any golden sheepskins. But excavations continue... |

68 - Roman
Emperor, Nero commits suicide at the age of 31. Initially
a popular ruler, it didn't take him long to mess things up.
Killing his mother didn't do much for his rep, either.
