Bakula Finally Signs

After months of speculation, Scott Bakula has finally decided to sign on for Paramount's new Star Trek series.

The on-again-off-again deal saw the actor agreeing to star in a sitcom for CBS, but he'll now leave that show for the drama. Bakula will play Captain Jonathan Archer in the prequel. According to the studio this captain will be more in the vein of Shatner's swashbuckling Kirk, than the more dour Picard and Janeway.

Bakula is returning to series television following a lengthy abscence. He's best known for Quantum Leap, though he also had a recurring role in Murphy Brown. Several efforts to move into motion pictures have proved less than impressive, though he was in American Beauty.

Let's hope the new series lightens up a bit. Star Trek takes itself entirely too seriously, if you ask us.
