Continuing
a well established tradition, Sunday's telecast of the 2001 Tony Awards
failed to garner a significant TV audience, according to figures released
today.
In spite of the fact that there was significant interest in this year's
blockbuster musical, The Producers, the broadcast only saw
an increase of 3% over last year. Of course, this may have been due
to the fact that, although the show was being promoted as "hosted
by Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick," the stars of The Producers
were only glimpsed at the very beginning of the show and at the very
end. If you wanted to see a number from the show, you had to wait
until the conclusion, and the majority of the awards for it were given
off camera. Including two of those given to Mel Brooks (read our review
of this misguided event here).
And it got low ratings. Well, duh!

1862 - It
was on this day that the Rev. Charles Dodgson told Alice Liddell
and her sisters the story of Alice, who followed a white rabbit
down a hole and entered a magical land. Alice Liddell insisted
that he write it all down.
