It
had to happen. Hard on the heels of Sony's admission that they used
quotes from a fictitious film critic to promote some of their films...someone
is suing. Two someones, actually. The two people in question are claiming
that they were "duped" into seeing A
Knight's Tale by ads for the movie in which the fictitious
'David Manning' described Heath Ledger as "this year's hottest
new star!"
Right. They went to see a movie based on the say-so of a critic they'd
never heard of from a paper they'd never heard of in a town they'd
probably never heard of. Uh huh. And where are these rocket scientists
from? California.
Not merely California, but suburbs of LA. We're not at all media-savvy
here in Tinseltown. We go and see movies based on ad blurbs all the
time.
Now, the question that occurs to me is: why did they decide to sue
over A Knight's Tale? It's not that bad. Why didn't they sue
over The Animal, which 'David Manning' also praised and which
is undoubtedly a piece of partially digested root vegetable?
Sony has suspended two executives for 30 days for committing the heinous
crime. Let's hope they don't pander to these litigious idiots.
After all, anyone who really goes to see a movie based on the (usually
highly edited) blurbs on the ads deserves to spend eternity watching
Battlefield Earth. |

1862 - It
was on this day that the Rev. Charles Dodgson told Alice Liddell
and her sisters the story of Alice, who followed a white rabbit
down a hole and entered a magical land. Alice Liddell insisted
that he write it all down.
