Fast
and Furious Beats All Comers

The
Fast and The Furious surprised even its own studio with an impressive
estimated opening weekend haul of $41.6 million. The street racing
flick, which features a mulit-ethnic cast headed by Vin Diesel (Pitch
Black), was originally expected to open with around $20 million,
according to Universal. The difference, which was in spite of very
mixed reviews, seems to be the result of anticipatory buzz. Whatever
it was, Furious beat Fox's Dr. Dolittle 2 by a handy
margin. The talking animals took in an estimated $26.7 million.
Lara Croft took a tumble as Tomb Raider fell to third place
with a $20.2 million estimatea 58% fall-off from last week's
opener. Atlantis continued Disney's lackluster summer with
a $13.2 estimate in its second week. Pearl Harbor also continued
its nose-dive, slipping to seventh place with an estimated $7 million.
The top five were rounded out by DreamWorks' solid Shrek which
took in an estimated $11 million. The animated ogre has made more
than $215 million for its studio, and probably earned the everlasting
hatred of Katzenberg's old colleagues at the Mouse House. |

1862 - It
was on this day that the Rev. Charles Dodgson told Alice Liddell
and her sisters the story of Alice, who followed a white rabbit
down a hole and entered a magical land. Alice Liddell insisted
that he write it all down.
