Pearl Harbor Holds On

It may have been universally trashed by the critics, but Mr and Mrs America kept going in droves, leading Pearl Harbor to take the top spot in its second week out with an estimated $30 million. This is a drop of over 50% on last week's haul, but Disney is anxious to point out that this is normal for blockbusters the week after Memorial Day. Mmm. We'll see how it fares next week...

The number two slot went to DreamWorks' Shrek with $28.4 million estimate, a drop of a little over 30% since last weekend. The Rob Schneider starrer The Animal took third place with a respectable $19.8 million estimate.

Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge opened wide this weekend, after running to sold out auds in LA and NYC for two weeks. It clocked an estimated $14.2 million -- not bad for a sophisticated movie that 20th Century Fox feared would have trouble finding an audience. As expected, ticket-buyers were mostly female and under thirty (their boyfriends were probably all at The Animal).

The top five were rounded out by the dismal What's the Worst That Could Happen. The Danny deVito, Martin Lawrence comedy made an estimated $13.3 million.
