As
Zorba the Greek he was the epitome of life itself, but now
at 86 actor Anthony Quinn has died. According to a spokesperson from
Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, he died at about 9:29 am.
The hospital declined to give any further details.
Quinn was born in Mexico to an Irish father, Frank Quinn, and Menhuela,
a Mexican mother of Aztec descent. They met while the elder Quinn
was fighting for Pancho Villa (how romantic is that!). The family
soon moved to the US, ending up in Los Angeles where Frank was killed
in a car accident. The family struggled in the years following his
death, and Anthony paid for his early acting lessons by sweeping floors
and cleaning windows.
Discovered by Mae West, he appeared in her play Clean Beds,
in which he played a character inspired by John Barrymore. The role
led to his meeting the real Barrymore and spending many happy hours
at his home drinking and reading from the classics.
His first movie role was an inauspicious 45-second bit in Parole
in 1936, but from there he went on to play a plethora of characters
and nationalities, winning two Academy Awards (for Viva Zapata!
and Lust for Life).
He married three times and fathered 13 children from 5 different women.
A force of nature, he continued to work, excercise and indulge his
love of art. He was the first to admit that Zorba, his most famous
creation, encapsulated everything about Anthony Quinn the actor. He
was a man who loved life and drank it deep.

1862 - It
was on this day that the Rev. Charles Dodgson told Alice Liddell
and her sisters the story of Alice, who followed a white rabbit
down a hole and entered a magical land. Alice Liddell insisted
that he write it all down.
