Gillian
Anderson has announced that the next season of The X-Files
will be her last. Talking to The
Sunday Times, Anderson revealed that she will be leaving the show
and starring in a play in London starting next summer.
After nearly nine years as the skeptical counterpoint to David Duchovny's
Mulder, Scully has evidently had enough. Duchovny, who had been in
a dispute with the producers and FOX over syndication of the popular
show, cut his appearances down to a precious few last season. Robert
Patrick was brought in as Scully's new partner and at the end of last
season it was announced that Mulder would be seen no more.
It doesn't take a genius to see the writing on the wall. As interesting
as Scully's character became, the fact is that The X-Files
was about Mulder and his obsession. The Doggett/Scully dynamic reduces
the show to the level of most parapsychology dramas, which, let's
face it, isn't too high. For her part, Anderson has been flexing her
acting chops in some interesting movies, most notably last year's
The House of Mirth, and she is planning on extending herself
further, though there is that little typecasting problem, "Sometimes
I am struck dumb by the narrow thinking with casting directors,"
she told The Sunday Times, "Some actors won't audition, but I
have to. Having been Scully for such a long time, I have to prove
myself in other roles."
Anderson declined to say what play and/or role would be occupying
her time in the West End next year, other than to point out that it
would be as far from Scully as possible.
