TV Tonight:
Friday, January 16th

  by Helen Stringer

Joan of Arcadia (CBS)It’s Friday night, which means that Joan Gerardi will be speaking with God again. The stellar cast of this show ensures that it is always interesting, though a recent tendency towards the more saccharine and religious has been off-putting. Joan walks a fine line between hip satire and Touched By An Angel polemic. Will CBS be able to avoid shoving it towards the latter?

Elsewhere, USA is launching some new episodes of the always-entertaining Monk and the BBC is debuting Rowan Atkinson’s Thin Blue Line. Oh, and Boston Public continues to tell the story of a high school in some parallel universe.

8:00pm
Joan of Arcadia – CBS – God tells Joan to throw a party while her parents are away. Hmmm...Is she sure it’s God?
The Goodbye Girl – TNT – For some reason TNT and Neil Simon thought that the 1977 flick needed a remake. This time around Jeff Daniels and Patricia Heaton star.

9:00pm
Boston Public – FOX – What is going on in David Kelley’s brain? Tonight this overheated high school melodrama introduces a porn star turned tutor into the mix. Apparently Boston schools don’t do any background-checking at all.
The Thin Blue Line – BBCA – This Rowan Atkinson show, debuting tonight, was a huge hit in the UK, but not really a patch on Blackadder. Still, probably worth a look.

10:00pm
Monk – USA – A new episode at last! Tony Shaloub’s Monk is a delight, so who cares if the mysteries aren’t very mysterious. USA has been on a roll for a while with shows that take familiar genres and tip them slightly off centre. If only broadcast TV were half as inventive!
