Morning
came early in Hollywood today. Very early. 5:30a.m., in fact.
A time that hovers somewhere between "early morning"
and "middle of the night". Still, unconscionable hour
or not, you can be sure that all over La-La Land and beyond, producers,
actors, directors and crew were huddled around their television
sets waiting to hear if this year would be the year.
And
for Martin Scorsese it just might be. Over the years the director
has frequently been the bridesmaid but never the bride as the
Academy has consistently refused to honour the country's pre-eminant
director; largely, one suspects, because it disliked much of his
chosen subject matter. Scorsese chose to tell stories from America's
dark underbelly, and to tell them as they are with no mythologising,
sepia-hued Godfather touches. This year he may have finally
done it, however. The Aviator snagged a handy 11 nominations
this morning, making the story of the young Howard Hughes the
odds-on favorite for Oscar kudos.
Right
behind The Aviator were Finding Neverland and
Million
Dollar Baby with 7 nominations each. The best picture
nomination also included Ray and Sideways.
Best
actor nods went to Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda), Johnny
Depp (Finding Neverland), Leonardo DiCaprio (The
Aviator), Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby) and
Jamie Foxx (Ray). On the distaff side the kudos went
to Annette Bening (Being Julia), Catalina Sandino Moreno
(Maria Full of Grace), Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake),
Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) and Kate Winslet (Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).
Notably
absent from the nominations (apart from a nod to Laura linney
in the best supporting actress category) is Bill Condon's Kinsey.
The much-praised film has recently been a target of vilification
by the far right, which seems to blame Kinsey's research for everything
from teen sex and Aids to the price of gas at their local pump.
It's somewhat discouraging to see that it appears to have worked.
On
a brighter note, the same is true of Mel Gibson's bloody The
Passion of the Christ. Contemporary Hollywood isn't comfortable
with too much passion in any arena.
