'Scary Movie 3' Breaks Records
Monday, October 27, 2003
There are lots of happy faces over at Dimension this weekend, as the the third outing in the Scary Movie franchise racked up the biggest October opening ever. The horror movie spoof benfited from a PG-13 rating (the previous two outings were 'R' rated) and hauled in en estimated $49.7 million.
In comparison, last week's winner The Texas Chainsaw Massacre tumbled 48% to a $14.7 million estimate for the weekend. Still, it was good enough for second place, though the sentimental Cuba Gooding-starrer Radio made an impressive challenge, eventually snagging third place with an estimated $14 million take in its opening weekend.
The number four slot went to Runaway Jury, which made en estimated $8.4 million, while Clint Eastwood's critically acclaimed Mystic River took in an estimated $7.6 million.
Past champ School of Rock came in sixth with an estimated $6.5 million take, while Tarentino's Kill Bill plummeted 52% to the number seven slot with an estimated $5.9 million; perilously close to that feelgood animal flick, Good Boy!, which snagged the number eight slot with an estimated $4.8 million.
The Coen brothers' Intolerable Cruelty took ninth place with a $3.7 million estimate, and Under The Tuscan Sun snagged the number ten spot with an estimated $2.2 million, but the big loser of the week has to be the Angelina Jolie-starrer Beyond Borders, which drove audiences away in droves in its opening weekend, barely managing eleventh place with a truly dismal $2 million estimate.
Happily, it's Halloween next weekend, so that should be it for horror movies. With the frighth-fest out of the way, it's full steam ahead for the Oscar contenders.
