New 'Who' from BBC
Friday, November 15, 2002
Rumors about a revival of the cult classic series Doctor Who are almost constant these days. But this one appears to be on the up-and-up as none other than the BBC have announced plans to re-shoot a lost adventure of the Doctor for internet viewing only. The story "Shada" was penned by Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy back in the late 70s, but production was halted due to a strike.
This version will star Paul McGann as the Doctor (he played the role in a US TV movie version), and feature James Fox, Hannah Gordon and Andrew Sachs. They'll also be dusting off K-9 for the show.
Adams was a regular writer for Doctor Who before moving on to create Hitchhiker and his tales, most of which featured in the classic Tom Baker era, are generally regarded as some of the best the series ever saw.
The BBC has made one other internet version, a short 30 minute seg last year which used Sylvester McCoy, who was the last Doctor to appear on the TV show, which was cancelled in 1989.
The story of "Shada" focuses on the Doctor's attempts to track down the most dangerous book in the universe.
Doctor Who originally debuted in 1963 and remains the world's longest-running science fiction series. One of the elements that kept it fresh was the ability of its central character to "regenerate" into a completely different actor.
